As to passport validity issues, key point here is that the UK has not gone the way Schengen has. now with a Canadian passport, validity for three months past your stay is required for Schengen. But not for the UK.

The other issue that I have encountered: gate agents who somehow look at the wrong place in Timatic and come up with incorrect rules. Mostly, if you have a non-canadian passport and go to some offbeat destintion.
