I'd say no as well.
Flying europen/eco flight, I had no chance of gaining FTL status - so instead used A3 to get *G.
The result on european flights, it that the whole experience in eco (also on the dirt cheap rates) is equivalent to "business" class unless you really want to eat on an shorthaul flight.
And that is not only the "potato salad", but also gaining time in the airports (priority security/boarding).
I think the occasions where FTL is better then a random *G status are few and far between. In fact, even for someone like me (europe, LH group mostly), I can't really think of any.
+ with *G, you'll have the occasional flight in other *A airlines covered as well
(talking about that, A3 does also have a very good service - not just a FFP)
PS : talking here about perks, not earning/redeeming miles, which may be a different story.
