Miles Comparison: China Airlines v. EVA Airways

With China Airlines updating their FFP for the Premium Economy cabin, here is what we have in comparison between China Airlines and EVA Airways starting from October 1 for short haul and December 1, 2014 for long haul.

No comparisons between Skyteam or Star Alliance awards would be made because one should not be banking miles in either airlines should they wish to use the miles for alliance awards.

Personally I believe EVA will take a huge hit if they do not act accordingly after China Airlines rolls out the Premium Economy products with lower redemption rates in almost all categories.

1. Within Asia, China Airlines offers better upgrade deals on
- Economy to Premium Economy
- Premium Economy to Business, and
- Economy to Business where Premium Economy is sold

2. For Australia, CI > BR during regular season, BR > CI during blackout periods because only Business upgrades are available.

3. For North America and Europe, China Airlines offers better upgrade deals on
- Economy to Premium Economy during regular season
- Premium Economy to Business
- Economy to Business where Premium Economy is sold
- Economy to Business during regular season where Premium Economy is not sold (such as VIE), and
- If comparing NA routes such as New York where both offer services, China Airlines wins on every upgrade options

1. EVA Airways offers better award ticket deals during China Airlines' black out periods for long haul.

2. China Airlines offers better standard award ticket deals for Business Class on long haul.

3. China Airlines offers equivalent standard award ticket deals for First Class on long haul where EVA Airways offers Royal Laurel, and better if we compare New York.

4. China Airlines offers discounts when one books multiple Business/First Class awards.

5. EVA Airways offers better one-way award ticket deals because China Airlines' charges 60% of R/T while EVA Airways only charges 50% of R/T.
