Then a moment ago, I thought I'd check whether the flights were available using Avios. The outward was available, and one close time-wise to the inward was too, and so I thought I'd press GO and cancel the paid ticket.

Then a price of 105,000 Avios + £6 came up.

105,000 for a 2hr50 min domestic flight!?! Seems pricey, no?

I'll keep the paid ticket as I have jokers to use and so my Avios are actually quite useful.
Sounds like you are flying AA in one direction, and US in the other. If you then price the itinerary as a single, roundtrip redemption, you will pay the much-higher redemption rates on BAEC's multi-partner redemption table.

Price the same flights as two one-ways, and the cost in F should drop to 45,000 Avios.

Of course, there may also be other flights available for redemption on AS, but for Avios redemptions on AS metal, you must call the BAEC Service Center. (You can easily check AS award availability on aa.com -- no log-in required.)
