Unless there has been a very recent change to AA's routing rules, both you and the agents are in error. The correct mileage deduction for USA-HKG-Japan in J is 85,000 miles: 55,000 miles for North America to Asia 2, and an additional 30,000 miles for Asia 2 to Asia 1. AAdvantage awards between North America and Asia 1 do not permit a connection in Asia 2, so two awards are required.
