On one occasion, I got an insight into variability of experience.
It was our first First, LHR-JNB. Everything went wrong starting with a bad trip to LHR, to a technical delay after going to T5B, requiring us to trudge back to the CCR and then get dinner there when we were expecting to eat on board, and then getting thrown out of the CCR when it closed, and so on. A full F cabin, crew worked off their feet, and all sorts of things left undone. We barely got any drinks, didn't get our beds made, etc. When we got off, my companion said "never again in First".
Two days later, it was of course the same crew when we flew back JNB-LHR. And from the moment we got on, it was stellar - and not just for us, but also for the other half a dozen or so in the cabin.
