Common law name change, and getting a passport (USA)

I changed my name using the common law method back in 1997, but because there are no court orders involved, I do not have much, if any, documentation for myself under my current name.

I've read all the literature about getting a passport with a common law name change that I can find, and I'm fine with the passport showing both my old name and my current name.
However, after calling to confirm that what I have will be sufficient, I'm left even less certain because nobody taking or processing passport applications that I can reach by phone seems to know anything about how to handle common law name changes.

Has anyone done this before, or have any advice on how to be sure my application is accepted and my passport comes out right?

Thanks,

Luke
