I have to disagree. If you ask BA to cancel the inbound flight then the agent is obliged to reissue the ticket to reflect the journey that you intend travelling. This would involve paying the change fee and the telephone service fee which may be offset to some extent by any refundable taxes etc. There is also the possibility that the cost of the one way outbound flight might increase.
It is quite possible that the agent suggests you leave the itinerary intact just in case you are able to take the inbound
