Apologies as I hadn't read the thread properly. If the OP has then there has to be some blame towards the TA. Having said that airlines make very little information readily available to a TA (no information relating to upgrades using points in the associated fare rules and conditions). So perhaps there is scope for better understanding in the future. (ex TA here hence why I can see from both sides). I know a lot of TA's use FT to up their knowledge.
