Thank you all for the advice.

We are keeping our reservation at the StR Osaka and have booked one night on points at the HR Kyoto. This means we can do two days of sightseeing in Kyoto with just very little luggage and not have to travel to and from Osaka.

Now it's time to learn the different Shinkansen!
