I wouldn't count on anything these days without reading my health insurance policy. As for Canadian "Medicare" - I know the coverage outside Canada is a lot less than it used to be (we get lots of snowbirds here in Florida - and they complain about the reduced coverage). But I have no idea exactly what the coverage is.

I know. Insurance is boring. But I'd rather spend a couple of hours being bored before a trip than being aggravated for months after or worse because I didn't have the right insurance. Robyn

P.S. If you wind up wanting to rent a car - you'll have to get an international driving permit as well before you leave for your trip.
You're right, Robyn... better safe than sorry! I'll look into our coverage and options this week. I intend to get the int'l driving permit next month because as mentioned, we have no choice, we need to rent a car for a week to get from Gunma to Nagano, Gifu, Ishikawa, etc. We're all over the map and in out-of-the-way places so it's the only way to be able to see everything that we want to experience in a feasible way.
