Andaz Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

Introduction I usually vacation in Europe and this is one my first "beach" vacations. I planned my first visit to Costa Rica so that I could stay at this hotel. I read nearly every review on the property and looked at every picture and the hotel exceeded all expectations. Room we stayed in the Andaz Suite. 1173sqft, 1.5 bath. It's a corner room so we had great views from every room. Swing and powder room as you enter door. Poured concrete floor. Luxury bathroom the size of the bedroom with high end finishes: very, very deep Kohler soaker tub, pebble floor throughout, double sink, rain shower with high water pressure, great bath amenities. Large balcony with accordion glass patio doors with comfortable seating that makes you actually want to spend time out there. High ceiling and large windows gave it even more visible space. Many TV channels but most are in Spanish. Coming back to the cool and comfortable room and pool was an oasis after a day out. Service Staff was prompt and genuinely friendly, always offering an "hola" and ride on the golf cart as they passed. Helpful without being overbearing. I also appreciated the hip attire that was not too matchy matchy. Dining Had all of our meals at Rio Bhongo and chaos pescao. Found all to be well prepared and tasty. Prices were very reasonable. Complimentary Cambi Kids Club (childcare), shuttle from 6am-6pm (goes to Four Seasons, Prieta Beach Club, Marina, $25 after 6pm, the shuttle driver will be on the lookout for wildlife to point out to you and will stop at popular scenic locale for you to take pictures), Prieta Beach Club entrance, minibar snacks and nonalcoholic beverage, flip flops, hats/fedora, straw beachbag for you to borrow during your stay ($30 if you take it) Beach To Consider: IF you are going from Four Seasons to Prieta Beach Club, Four Season offered us transportation. If going from Prieta Beach Club to Four Seasons, would need to call and wait 15min or more for Andaz shuttle.Prieta Beach Club: beaches are a little better but the pools not as nice as Andaz and the decks need to be refinished Tips Families: I went with my 5 and 6 year old and felt that it was a great resort for family. It was built to include children rather then accommodating them as an afterthought. Cambi Kids Club, family pool, fedoras and flip-flps for the kids. I was pleasantly surprised to find during my stay that there was an unadvertised special of kids eat free when at least one adult ordered. This was for all meals and not just for breakfast as you find with many hotels. Kids Eat for Free promotion in Rio Bhongo only for eat in, not at pool or room service. This is running until at least December per management. They put us in building 7 which was perfect, next to family pool and between 2 of the restaurants, Rio Bhongo and Chaos Pescao.Couples: several separate building provides some seclusion with adult only pools and surrounding activities. Flights Eat at the hotel before going to the airport, since food at airport is even more overprice than any other airport I've been in (sandwich, water, gatorade, 1 scoop gelato= $31) Shoulder season is May/June/maybe July: cheaper air/hotel, not that much rain. We had no rain during out stay in early June. Overall My best advice: Once the word is out, this will become an aspirational property. Because it is new, it is severely undervalued. It is now highly obtainable both in revenue booking as well as for 15K points or $100+ 7500 C&P. After 3-4 years as a Diamond member, this has been my best use of a DSU. Take advantage of this now, because once the word it out, this will be very popular and prices will head up fast! I am heading to the popular Andaz Maui in 6 months and doubt that the physical property will be as nice. Air/hotel/food, going here is less than 1/2 the price compared to Hawaii
