I think this process can work to our favour sometimes. Generally, for example, I've found it easier to get award seats on UA (like three J seats at absolutely peak Christmas time, just a month in advance) than AC for US destinations, even when the city may also be served directly or indirectly by AC. There does seem to be a separate, special allocation of award seats either for *A or AC on UA.
