USDM doesn't have the same restrictions as AA, so theoretically connecting in the Middle East is not a problem.
The 10-segment rule seems to be more frequently discussed where there are domestic connections. Having an itinerary limited to 8 segments of purely international travel was not rare in the past (you can pretty much reach anywhere in the world with 4 segments)... perhaps a crude implementation of 'travel on the most direct route' limitation.
