2008 Toyota Camry.
It's not as bad as your friend says, although the road in the Yukon Territory is definitely not up to par. From Haines Junction, it's probably 190 miles paved and 10 miles gravel, but those gravel miles are all in construction zones. The paved sections vary from decent to with pretty bad with big frost heaves. As soon as you cross into Alaska, though, the road improves drastically. The Canadians sure aren't getting their [ludicrously high] gas tax money's worth.
I took a few pictures of a "typical" Alaska Highway scene. If I weren't on 56kbps satellite Internet in the ultra-remote Alaskan village of Gambell, I'd upload a picture or two for ya.
