If you are using AA miles, you can't have AA waitlist you for JL flights. You can only check regularly yourself, and call AA to change it when you notice that an award has open up.
It all depends whether the airline you want to redeem for allows waitlisting. It does not have to be airline's own flights using that airline's currency. BA does not allow waitlisting award classes but AA does, and I have never had a problem asking BAEC to waitlist award classes on AA. If JL allows waitlisting award classes there will be no issue with another airline doing just that.
