Am thinking of booking the HI in SCL. There's the 19% tax which non-Chileans are exempt from paying. Does the hotel charge this in addition to the room rate? Just wondering how easy it will be to get back refund for the tax if so.
In my experience, they simply don't charge the tax. It is not included in the quoted rate. However, they will convert the quoted rate into CHP at their own exchange rate in order to sum with other charges and make out a receipt in CHP. They will then convert back again into USD for charging to a credit card at another rate they choose. You can pay in CHP if you like, but then the tax will be due. The result of the currency manipulations is unfavorable, but still less than paying the tax.
