If you're a single female you might not want some stranger to know what room you're checking in to. When my wife traveled for business she made sure her room number wasn't spoken aloud at check in, and she made sure that she didn't get off the elevator with just one (or more) other men at her floor. Sometimes meant riding the elevator a bit longer, but it also meant more safety.
