Nothing strange about it. In fact, it's a sign of a properly-trained Front Desk employee. A good Front Desk representative operates under the assumption that there might be someone within earshot.

Based on what you wrote, I think you see this interaction as a negative. I see it as a huge positive. In fact, if this happened to me, I'd probably seek out the Front Desk Manager or Manager-On-Duty and compliment the employee.
