Slightly OT: the cost of travel

Saw this BBC piece: Flying the unfriendly — and pricey — skies , on the cost of travel and the increase in ancillary charging.

I know that many on here dislike the ancillary charging approach and the article appears to have US carriers more in mind; BA don't charge for alcohol, pillows etc and in theory offer a discount to those not taking baggage, rather than charging (but agree this is presentational).

But the article also notes that the cost of tickets and travel has gone down. I think that this is probably right, but do others agree?
