As MEL-LAX is a new route (this go-round) and there are more J seats on the 787 than 777, I think I would take my chances with a GPU on the new bird. My experience is that E+ on the 787 is not the disaster many make it out to be and I feel appreciably better coming off a long 787 flight than I do after a 777 or 747, for example.
