If Delta wants to make sure that their best customers get their choice, they should really start offering pre-ordered meals. Furthermore, in this scenario, a paid BE pax with no status could have their order taken after a medallion on an op-up.
Happened to me on UA recently. I have no status there but was in paid domestic First as part of an international business ticket. The FA took orders and then came back to me and told me they were out of my first choice. My seatmate, who was upgraded at the gate according to GIDS, had the same first choice as me and received it. I guess DL is following the herd in this case. As a PM who rarely WFBFs I guess this works to my advantage more often than not since I don't fly DM-heavy routes/times, but I still don't think it's right to give upgrades priority over paid F/BE.
