I've never had a problem getting my companion a seat on a flight...even on very, very busy days around the holidays. Heck, I booked my mother on my CP on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving a whole 25 hours before we took off. No big deal (we did oversell the flight though!

). Not sure why you want to book a seat now for your wife, change it, then change it back.
Just fly your trip with your son then change your CP and book your wife. This far out, you shouldn't have any trouble. Even if your flights are sold out right now, space is likely to open up before November/December.

No*. It's not a new rule. It was the rule back in 2004 when I got my first CP. Don't try to do it because they'll pull your companion off the flight.
* The exception is IRROPS or oversells. I've split from my companion before with no problem. Just make sure to tell the GA right away so they can note it.
