Options for flights from the East Coast

Hi everyone,

Having never been to Hawaii before, I'm having trouble figuring out the cheapest options for flights. We will be leaving from a New York City airport (any) and going to the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai (not sure of the order yet, that would depend on the flight prices).

In general, from your experience, is it cheaper to fly directly to Honolulu from the East Coast and then take an interisland flight? Or would it be better to fly to San Francisco/L.A., spend a few days there, and then fly directly to Maui/Kauai/Big Island?

Also, what is a "reasonable" price? I'm not seeing too many 2015 fares under $1000 so far. We would be going July 2015 (I know it's too early to book flights now, but I want to start exploring the options). We would be flying coach and looking to get the cheapest flight possible.

Thanks.
