I know what it says, however I am pretty sure that AA does not have award availability on its codeshare, so becomes moot. The reports I have seen by people successful with it are that they have been rebooked onto the BA flight number when the upgrade is processed

I may be wrong and based on the website wording, indeed it does state it should be possible but I don't recall seeing anyone reporting success in doing it in that manner
