When you say "AA-ticketed, BA-operated flight" do you mean the flight number is an AA flight number or simply that you purchased the ticket from AA? Makes a difference in what you'll need to look for and do in order to upgrade.
If it is an AA codeshare at the moment, it will need to be rebooked onto the BA flight number in order to process upgrade unless things have recently changed. I do not believe that AA offers award availability on its codeshares on BA
