I'm planning on purchasing a one way AA (metal) ticket FCO - MIA via JFK through my cruise choiceair travel agent (the one way tickets are pretty reasonable vs. thru AA site) for my no AA status husband. I'm doing this because my XPLAT colleague is going to apply one of his eVIPs for a hopeful upgrade.
I have no idea what booking class the travel agency will give me. They once told me they have deals with the airlines for these good one way rates. Is there a chance he'll be booked in a class that AA won't allow an eVIP to be used? Are there such things? I imagine it will be a deeply discounted ticket.
If I need to advise the travel agent, I'd like some advice here.
I (AA Plat) already have a business award seat on this flight for myself if it matters.
I'm pretty sure its applicable to all fares, but I could see a possibility that consolidator fares might be excluded. You should check out and post in this thread on SWUs -

Also, realize that there has to be availability for the upgrade as well. Just because business seats may be for sale does not mean that the upgrade is available. And, if they are waitlisted, then your husband will be the lowest priority. He will be behind any status passengers waitlisting for the upgrade even if they make the request after him. For a busy location (such as a cruise), there is a good chance he would not be upgraded even with a eVIP/SWU.
