I (used to) bring in vacuum cleaners all the time. (Personal and office use, as they appear to be misused and break down often here - difficult to figure out why!)

I leave them in the original packaging and then into a large suitcase.

This way, as Oliver and others state, the original box and packaging help protect it, and when stored within a suitcase, it is easier handled by the baggage characters.

Note that declaring any cargo as "Fragile" thus reduces your ability to claim against the carrier (By signing a waiver to claim against them for damage) - I would recommend against it if it is in the original packing - as this is intended for multiple handling by the manufacturer.

Or you can advise the agent that it should be handled carefully - but do not sign the waiver of your rights to claim if damaged by the airline...
