My wife has proposed late-April/May due to warmer weather (we want to sit outside at caffés in the evening without heavy layering against coastal winds) and less risk of flooding. Apparently the first few weeks of May are still fairly quiet in Venice as the tourists don't arrive in large numbers until June, but the weather is supposed to be the best and most consistent. I've read that springtime in Vienna is beautiful as well, so it looks like we'll plan for late-April/early-May.
