The man is not stupid. He engineered the reverse takeover of US and now AA. He started by running America West is now running the biggest airline in the world.
Drinking habits aside, I would say he is a very smart man based on his accomplishments.
In the past, he also made many mistakes that pretty much led US Airways to have a small pool of frequent flyers and a terrible F product for many years that no one was paying for. Remember plastic cups in F and trying to sell soft drinks in Y? That was all him.
