The fighters are not there to make the passengers feel safe. Let’s face it. If it was a real 9-11 plot, a happy outcome is unlikely for those passengers. The fighters are there to limit causalities on the ground.
The probability that an unruly passenger is actually most of the way into a successful hijacking for the purpose of crashing the plane into a high-value target is now laughable. Scrambling F-16s serves only one purpose: terrorizing the passengers on that plane.
