PHX concourse has several long arms off a central corridor, which indeed can involve a bit of a hike. In high summer I'm not sure I'd regard PHX as weather reliable. The last few week or so has been difficult due to dust / sand storms, but I agree it's fairly the exception. CLT is a good new connection point, PHL weather isn't so bad, but it gets caught in any Eastern Seaboard rubbish.
