I don't know the legality of checking in with one PP and then trying to use another for entry... That seems shady and wouldn't match the pax manifest PP info that's transmitted to Brazil...

AFAIK OP was required to enter and leave the USA on the USA passport but certainly was allowed to enter the next country on a different passport. It's not shady at all; in fact this is what dual nationals are often supposed to do.
