They obviously can't put you on a flight with no seat but 'next available' are the keywords. Since you are booked on the first flight of the day there will be a few other direct and indirect flights including codeshare flights later in the day. Hopefully they will put you on one of those flights to ATH.
IME they can also put you on the next available flight and waitlist you on all the flights before that one. This way, if you are lucky and someone fails to show up, you get his seat.
