FYI, it's the same APD fee for every US destination. The fees are calculated by which distance band a country's capital city falls under. Whether you're flying to BOS or to LAX, it's all the same. It's calculated by the distance of London to DC.

I've heard AMS has lower departure taxes, but they still seemed surprisingly high ($375 is better than $575, but it's still crazy).

There's no reason AMS should have taxes that high, unless you're looking for an itinerary departing AMS and not returning from it, in which case Delta would be adding the international origination surcharge of ~$200.

Have you tried pricing your trip as a roundtrip from the USA? I'm able to price a sample SEA-LHR, open jaw, AMS-SEA all in the front cabin for the requisite miles + $64 taxes total.
