See if you can get a sympathetic agent to go back to revenue management and open seats. They arent 'supposed to', but given that you did have the tickets and did get a confirmation they might consider it
Its not just to do with seats being available but to do with the advance purchase requirements of the discounted business class fares. The fares around GBP3200 require a 7 day advance purchase
If he wishes to travel in a weeks time, then getting lower fares should be easy
