Not sure why you say "they will have to reschedule". They only have to honour the commitment originally made.
Not only that, instead of paying the change fee plus the difference in airfare that he would pay right now, he would most likely have to buy a new ticket at the full walk up fare (probably a lot more than the current change fee and fare difference).
