Delta refuses to accomodate me on another airline after MX IRROP

I'm about to begin the return half of a DL trip, EYW-ATL-DCA. Plane for first leg had MX, they're flying in a replacement. Will leave over 2 hrs late and miss connection. No later flights available ATL-DC (any of DCA/IAD/BWI) so I'm consigned to ovenighting in ATL and continuing in the AM. AA has seats EYW-MIA-DC (my choice) tonight, but DL agent has tried calling in for permission to move me over and been denied. My fare class is V, and I have no DL status; there are econ seats open AA.

So, this is mainly a rant; I doubt there's any advice you can offer that will get me home tonight short of eating the cost of rebooking on AA.

DL will of course voucher hotel, taxi (if needed), and meals in ATL; I'm guessing I should also expect a voucher of $300 or so for the MX IRROP delaying me several hours?
