Planes are a very expensive capital asset so you would want to make them work as hard as possible. With varying flight lengths and the many other constraints on when you can/would want to fly to different destinations it is perfectly logical to rotate planes around the network to sweat the asset.

It's pretty typical in any form of transport industry - planes, trains and trucks.
