If you are in Singapore, give yourself the experience of staying at Raffles. It is not perfect, but is a wonderful place if you have any appreciation for history and elegance. Possibly it doesn't have all the bells and whistles…older bathrooms and TV sets in some rooms. Not sure on the TV sets, but I know they have redone some of the baths. Nonetheless, we stayed last year in my favorite suite (with an old bathroom) and it was still great…although I might make an inquiry with Reservations on the bathroom issue in the future. But the outside hallways in teak and marble are just magnificent and I always walk all around the hotel, just for the experience. The food is great -- love dim sum and free-flow lime juice in the Empire Cafe. Love sleeping under the fans in the high-ceilinged top-floor rooms. Really memorable in every way. Also, the pool is great, especially early in the morning or late at night when bats sometimes swoop by. So special. I have stayed at the Shangri-La and LOVE the pool there, but Raffles is such a special experience. And it is a fairly quick walk to Makansutra Glutton's Bay hawker center, which always is a good quick cheap meal. Raffles is one of a kind.
