Much depends on why your flight was cancelled and perhaps also on what your country of departure was.
We were in South America returning to Canada. They told us that the plane was having mechanical issues at it's departure point causing delays and that they have a rule about how long the pilots are allowed to fly for so they couldn't have it come to pick us up.
We did see the $50 printed on the ticket - right beside 'fee' and we asked her about it at the counter and she said 'that's a tax that will be applied to your bags if you chose to use this'. My grievance is that we were lied to...it seems in an effort to keep over 230 people civil.
