I think you misunderstood the article - it was referencing American airlines as in North American based in the US and NOT American Airlines, the carrier (AA). Thus, airlines was NOT capitalized.
I guess if the term US airlines was used, it would be more distinguishable unless someone mistakes it for US Airways.
