Airbnb Host Can't Get Squatter To Leave

In late May, an Airbnb user from Austin, TX booked Cory Tschogl's Palm Springs, CA vacation condo for 44 days and paid for the first month in advance. (It's Airbnb's rule for extrended stays.)

When the renter first arrived, he complained about the hard water at the condo and despite being offered a full refund, he decided to stay.

After 30 days passed, Tschogl learned that Airbnb was having difficulties collecting the rest of the balance. (Airbnb ended up covering the cost.)

After the 44 days were up, the condo owner texted the renter saying that their contract was up and that the power would be shut off in 24 hours. It only went down hill from there. The renter replied that he was legally occupying the condo and a loss of electricity would leave him unable to work. The renter also texted that his brother had gotten sick and was hospital after drinking the unfiltered tap water at the condo.

The condo owner noticed that the property's electricity bills were skyrocketing. Her father, who lives in the area, dropped by to find the AC on with the door and windows wide open.

Because the renter has been in the condo for more than 30 days, he has tenant rights under CA tenant law and the condo owner has been forced to hire legal representation in order to have him evicted. That process could take 3-6 months.

Tschogl's main frustration with Airbnb has been the company's slowness to respond to her emails.
