Agree with your sentiments re. Traverse. But was quite happy to receive one for a four day rental in Bay Area / Yosemite, on an SFAR reservation. 2,500 miles on odometer, and averaged 27mpg - I reckoned this was pretty good when it included some of the climbs between the Foothills and the Yosemite Valley floor
