FWIW I am infinitely more likely to drink when it's free. I don't much care for paying for alcohol, especially at prices most places charge, but I like to feel I'm "getting my money's worth" when it's free. That said, I do not drink to excess in any circumstance where it's free and I certainly wouldn't act the fool on a plane like the people the OP describes.
