I realize this might be a bit of a dumb question since airline pricing factors on so many things, but I also find it funny when the routing YVR/NRT/BKK can end up being cheaper than YVR/NRT etc. Just wondering if anyone knows off hand, not looking for a major explanation of how price per mile works or available seats per mile etc.
Can't really help much where PEK/PVG are concerned but fares to the western pacific on AC can seem really weird. Here are some examples taking TPAC wb in Oct and EB in NOV (taken from ac.com):

YYZ-HND nonstop $1,461 (Base fare 798 plus 580 YQ)
YYZ-HKG nonstop $1,458 (Base fare 1,133 plus 248 YQ)

YYZ-SIN via YVR/HND wb, via HND eb $1,348 (805 + 426 YQ)

Yes, you can go down to SIN via HND for $100 less than just to HND, and BKK is almost the same as SIN.)

Obviously someone visiting Japan can also visit SIN for much the same price!
