I've also read reports that nobody was ever able to repeat this feat in a simulator, and McDonnell Douglas claimed it was impossible.

If you ever get a chance to hear Capt. Haynes speak, do it. He was a great speaker when I heard him 20 years ago, and I'm sure he hasn't lost a step.
