I thought an interesting part of MH's statement included:

"The aircraft’s flight route was declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

And International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions." Source

I can only assume ISIS territory is similarly not restricted and therefore airlines do not feel there is a threat to safety? I assume same goes for EK.
