boarding the wrong plane [could it happen on AA?]

When I logged to FT, I was greeted with http://www.flyertalk.com/story/two-f...s-ryanair.html. Could this happen on AA?: At JFK gates 11 and 12 (I think there is another such pair), which have a common doorway [=bp checkpoint], but diverge later on. Once there were two planes departing at about the same time, one from 11 the other from 12, after the doorway there was an agent directing pax to their flights--BUT, he was directing them to the wrong flights...until I corrected him.
[Since T8 was built as a NEW terminal, why have such a doorway arrangement in the first place, and why have two flights for such gates depart at about the same time?]
