I've been Hilton Gold off and on for the last 6 years and have been very happy with it. I was Marriott Silver from 2009-2010 and found it fairly worthless. Also, if you stay at lower-tiered hotels, you'll get much better benefits at Garden Inns and Hampton Inns as a Gold than at similar Marriott properties.
